“I literally wanted to find out how to tell a story, my story in particular, to this audience. Everything has a personal story, which I know as a Black man would be personal to other Black men and women. I pushed at it strong. I was like yes, this is important, and I want to talk about it. My self-portrait was really about colonialism, history, the present and the future.”
